Linux and Written Exams
For written exams, Arcanic Observer must be used to ensure that the computer can be monitored during the exam.
Arcanic Observer works with certain versions of Linux. Please note that the client is unsupported, and:
- It is only available as a Debian package, meaning it works with distributions such as Ubuntu, Debian, and Mint.
- It currently only works with X11, not Wayland, due to technical limitations. (This is stated to the student when rights are checked at startup if Wayland is detected.)
- The taskbar icon does not show a red badge, but instead a red border appears around the screen.
For written exams in study programmes under the Study Board for Computer Science, it is possible to apply for permission to use Linux versions that are not supported by Observer. You should only apply if your daily operating system is a version of Linux that does not support Arcanic Observer. In your application, you must specify which version of Linux you are using, and by submitting your exemption, you confirm that this information is correct and that you will use this version during the exam.
Each semester, an email is sent to all students with instructions on how to apply for an exemption. Applications must be submitted every semester, and the application deadline must be respected.
During the exams, there will be extra exam guards present with knowledge about Linux.
